| Annotation: |
Carmody draws on previous writing and concerns from earlier books, chiefly the Obernewtyn Chronicles and the Little Fur series, to create a wonderful otherworld in the Kingdom of the Lost.
Bily and Zluty are brothers living alone except for birds, diggers and various insects. They have built a cosy house and learnt through experience and careful observation how to harvest enough food and goods from their surroundings to survive—even through the harsh Winter.
Bily is happy by the home hearth, taking pleasure in gardening and keeping the preserves in the pantry well-stocked. It is Zluty who makes the annual pilgrimage to a distant forest and gather essentials to see them through the winter.
This year's journey begins with a strange red sky which, unrealised by the brothers, is a harbinger of change.
Possibly post-apocalyptic, possibly tending towards sci-fi—unfortunately readers will have to wait for the next book to find out—that is the only downside to a wonderfully original and entertaining story illustrated by the author. The books end with a big adventure ahead of the brothers and another character, a Monster, illustrations of who reveal another clever aspect (about size) of the tale. |
